To use 'God' when discussing the mythology with someone not terribly familiar with it is good practice, as per Tolkien's example.

Regarding usage, Tolkien was prone to use 'God' more often than 'Eru' or 'Illúvatar' in his letters and in certain texts related to his mythology. In 'Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth' (found in The History of Middle-earth X: Morgoth's Ring), Andreth, a wise women, states that among men it is told that one day Eru will enter into the world to heal it and men due to their Fall under the influence of Morgoth.Īs the saying goes, if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck. Furthermore, Illúvatar is given all honor that Tolkien would give his God. Given Tolkien's devout Catholicism, and his desire to honor God's creation through (what he termed) 'sub-creation,' it only makes sense that a being such as Illúvatar would be the appearance of Tolkien's God. The ages, Tolkien noted, seem to have shortened in length as history progressed. It eventually meets up with 'our history' and we are now in the Sixth or Seventh Age (as of 1958). As stated by Tolkien the west of Middle-earth is Europe set 6000 years or so into a mythological past. Middle-earth is nothing more than what we would call the 'Old World' or what the Greeks called the oikouménē. There are differences, of course, between Christian mythology and Tolkien's. It could be argued that Illúvatar is the Abrahamic God - or, more accurately, the appearance of the Abrahamic God in Tolkien's mythology. There was also and interesting point made over on r/Tolkienfans that Sauron preferred the services of men as opposed to orcs, so it is likely that he would have eradicated his former servants once he got a stable power base amongst men.Īnd Sauron would have never tried to launch an assault on Valinor, not after he saw first hand the utter destruction that the Valar wrought on Numenor when they tried to do the same. I could definitely see Middle Earth entering an era of peace under Sauron's rule, albeit a totalitarian and strictly controlled existence. So I would say that the other poster made a valid prediction. Sure, he was prepared to do anything it took to attain his goals- he would burn the world to the ground if he could be ruler of the ashes- but the goal itself was never causing misery. Sauron, unlike Morgoth, wasn't evil from his inception, and he wanted simply to rule, not to destroy. You can see him kind of like Japan in WW2 with the whole co-prosperity sphere that ended up being a brutal mockery of it's original purpose. Sauron's goal was never sadistic he only wanted to dominate, to bring all of the peoples of Middle Earth under one rule for their own good. Think we missed one?
